In late 2014 I was fresh out of school and ended up getting invited to volunteer at a grass-roots basketball program in my neighbourhood. My primary role was to be a communications designer but I would often step in as a mentor when needed. I was tasked to develop a visual communication strategy for an outreach program that brings children from at-risk communities into an environment that fosters friendship, self-esteem and cooperation through athletics. This program was sponsored by the MLSE Foundation run by Centennial College and local neighbourhood volunteers.
This volunteer relationship lasted 2 years, then followed by 2 years of part-time paid work on the weekends. Early exposure to the social side of my industry still influences my goals and career path to this day.
